I read

Behind every good writer there is an equally talented editor.

Just compare the rough draft to the finished product. My editing experience extends from newspapers to academic literature. During a newspaper career of more than 30 years, I spent a decade or more on the copy desk, shepherding newspaper content from reporter to print.

Most recently, as director of communications and media for a university research center, I helped coordinate and manage the publication of a 26-chapter textbook on mobile health.

I am available for proofreading, editing and writing opportunities.

I write

My writing skills have been honed over a 40-year career in journalism, corporate communications, and academia. Someone once told me that writing is like exercise. If you don’t work out regularly, your muscles get tired.

Everyone, as they go through life, picks up additional skills along the way. As newspapers changed, so has my skillset. In addition to writing, I also am experienced in web design, web content management, photography, audio/video editing, graphic design and the use of a variety of Adobe applications.

Websites I have designed and maintain include:

https://md2k.org — the website for the Center of Excellence for Mobile Sensor Data-to-Knowledge (MD2K), an NIH-funded research project headquartered at the University of Memphis.

http://mprov.md2k.org — A project to develop a provenance-based data analytics cyberinfrastructure for high-frequency mobile sensor data. This project grew out of the MD2K project and is funded by the National Science Foundation.

http://mperf.md2k.org — A project under contract by the Intelligence Agency Research Project Activity focused on the use of mobile sensors to support productivity and employee well-being.

https://mhealth.md2k.org — This website was built to highlight the activities of the MD2K Training Core, specifically a webinar program in which thought leaders in mobile health field discuss a topic of interest to the mHealth community.

Hospitality Hub brochure — This brochure was to promote the Hospitality Hub, a downtown Memphis non-profit that focuses on helping the homeless find employment and housing.

Event Invite2014 — This invitation was for an annual fund-raiser held by the Hospitality Hub.

About me

I like to say I was hatched in Maryland, raised in Virginia and seasoned in Memphis.

Memphis is my home. I’ve lived here longer than anywhere else and love its music, its barbecue and its dogged determination to make something of itself — sometimes, in spite of itself.

If I could have a conversation with my 10-year-old self, I’d tell me to stick with the violin and piano lessons. And be fearless.
